今天，我有機會同東盟九國的領導人首次會晤，探討發展中國與東盟各國面向二十一世紀的友好合作，感到十分高興。首先，我對東盟成立三十周年，表示熱烈的祝賀。

Today Ifeel more than happy to have the opportunity togather together with leaders of nine ASEANcountries for the fires time to discuss and explorethe development of Chinese-ASEAN friendship andcooperation oriented toward the 21st century. Firstof all, I wish to offer my warm congratulations toASEAN on its 30th anniversary.

我相信，這次會晤將標志著中國與東盟關系進入一個新的發展階段。

This meeting, I believe, marks the beginning of a new stage of development in Chinese-ASEANrelations.

我這次來，是抱著積極參與、擴大共識、增進互信、加強合作的目的，與東盟各國領導人共同探討雙方未來的發展目標和指導方針。

With the purpose of engaging active participation broadening common ground, enhancingmutual trust and strengthening cooperation, I have come here to explore together withASEAN leaders the objectives and guidelines for the development of our future relations.

我們正處在世紀之交的重要時刻，應該以長遠的戰略眼光審視和處理雙方關系，建立中國與東盟面向二十一世紀的睦鄰互信伙伴關系。這不僅符合時代的潮流，有利于中國和東盟各國的根本利益，也有利于推動建立公正合理的國際新秩序，有利于促進亞洲與世界和平與發展的崇高事業。

At this important historical juncture on the eve of the new century, we should approach andhandle our bilateral relations from a long-rang strategic perspective and forge aChinese-ASEAN good-neighborly partnership of mutual trust orientated toward the 21stcentury. This is not only in conformity with the trend of the times and in the fundamentalinterest of China and ASEAN countries, but also facilitates the establishment of a just andrational new international order and the advancement of the lofty cause of peace anddevelopment of Asia and the world at large.

中國人民和東盟各國人民都是勤勞勇敢、聰明智慧的人民，自古以來就在自己的土地上創造了燦爛的文明，形成了具有東方色彩的優秀文化傳統，為人類的進步作出了重要的貢獻。中國與東盟各國或山水相連，或隔海相望，在悠久的交往中，人民之間形成了深厚的傳統友誼。

Both the Chinese and the ASIAN people are industrious and courageous people full ofwisdom. Since ancient times, they have created brilliant civilizations and built up fine culturaltraditions full of Oriental character in their own lands, thus making important contributions tothe progress of humanity. Joined together by mountains and rivers or facing each other acrossthe sea, China and ASEAN countries have developed a profound traditional friendship amongthe people in the course of their age-old contacts and exchanges.

中國和東盟國家都發生了滄海巨變。中國人民經過一個世紀的奮斗和犧牲，實現了民族解放，建立了新中國，又經幾十年的努力，把自己國家建設成為一個初步繁榮昌盛的社會主義國家。東盟國家人民經過長期的艱苦奮斗，掙脫殖民主義的枷鎖，贏得民族獨立，自建設自己國家的過程中取得了令人稱道的成就。

Profound changes have taken place in both China and ASEAN countries. Through a century-longstruggle and sacrifice, the Chinese people won their national liberation and established theNew China. With decades of more efforts, they have built China into a socialist country withinitial prosperity. Through protracted and arduous struggle, the people of ASEAN countrieshave also shaken off the yoke of colonialism, won their national independence and scoredcommendable achievements in their course of nation building.
