秀水街形成于1980年，一群有抱負的年輕人在北京秀水東街做起了自己的生意，當時僅有幾個極其簡陋的攤位。他們做絲綢及外貿服裝生意。盡管簡陋樸素，秀水街的內在魅力還是掩藏(obscure)不住的。當越來越多的攤販(vendor)開始售賣中國傳統絲綢制品和手工制品，秀水街便因此而得名。北京秀水街，與長城、故宮、烤鴨這些“北京象征”一起，成為很多海內外游客到北京旅游的一個地標。

The Xiushui Street was originated in 1980 when agroup of ambitious youth started their business atSilk Eastern Road, Beijing, with very simple stalls atthat time. They dealt in silk and foreign-tradeapparels. Though simple and crude, the inherentcharms of Xiushui Street could not be obscured. The street got its name when more and morevendors began to sell traditional Chinese silk products and crafts. Beijing Xiushui Street, together with the symbols like the Great Wall, the Imperial Palace, and the Beijing roast duck, become landmarks of Beijing in the eyes of a lot of tourists from home and abroad.
