  Saving Panda

The relationship between people and pandas is very odd. We are so fond of them that when the Chinese government lent a pair to the San Diego Zoo for six months, the number of visitors increased sharply, and the zoo sold over half a million panda T-shirts. (1)

  (2) They suggest that parenting instincts are aroused(激起)by the common features(面貌特征) of babies―the round faces and small jaws(下腭)of the pandas. Pandas, even in adulthood, show all of these interesting features.

Until recently, however, it seemed nearly certain that this much-loved animal was destined(注定)to die out. Even now the giant panda numbers fewer than l,000 in a decreasing wilderness(荒野) in one small area in China. (3)"It's easy to save the panda," says George Schaller, a world-famous panda expert. "All it needs is bamboo and peace."

Wildlife experts have suggested some basic steps to help. (4) The plan was submitted(呈交)to the Chinese government in August 1989. After more than a year of discussion and delay, the National People's Congress agreed to fund the plan.

Almost 100 pandas are kept in Chinese zoos and at zoos in other countries, but during the past three decades fewer than 100 baby pandas have been born in China. The majority of these have died young.

The most promising hope for the panda's future seems to be the increased efforts by the Chinese government. (5)

A.Although the reason we love pandas is not easy to explain, animal scientists offer some possible theories.

  B. A detailed plan for the protection of the panda has been drawn up by the World Wildlife Fund.

  C. They have established 13 panda reserves and announced plans for 14 more.

  D. The number of the panda is decreasing gradually since then.

  E. But an end for the world's favorite wild species may still be avoidable.

  F. When a panda was born in a Tokyo Zoo in 1986, thousands of people phoned daily to hear a recording of the baby's cry.

  正確答案:FAEBC
