冠詞是一種虛詞，本身不能獨立使用，只能附著在一個名詞上幫助說明這名詞的含義。英語中的冠詞有兩個，一是定冠詞the ;另一是不定冠詞，有兩個形式，a或an【a用在以輔音(指音不指字母)開頭的詞前，an用在以元音開頭的詞前】。

　　1.不定冠詞的基本用法

　　(1)用來表示“一”這個數量，意思和one差不多：

　　The plan will be ready in a week or two. 計劃一兩周內就可定好。

　　(2)也可用來表示“某一個(類別――人或東西)”：

　　Even a child can answer this question. 就是小孩子也能回答這個問題。

　　2.定冠詞的基本用法

　　(1)表示某個或某些特定的人或物：

　　Give me the book . 把那本書給我。

　　Where are the other comrades? 其他同志在哪里?

　　(2)第二次提到某東西時：

　　There is a book on the desk and the book is mine. 桌子上有一本書，那本書是我的。

　　(3)表示世界上獨一無二的東西(如：太陽，月亮，地球，世界，天空，宇宙)：

　　the sun , the moon , the globe , the world , the sky , the universe .

　　(4)和一個形容詞連用，代表一類人或東西：

　　the rich(富人)，the poor(窮人)，the deaf(聾人)，the blind(盲人)，the dead(死者)，the oppressed(受壓迫的人)，the unemployed(失業者)等。

　　(5)專有名詞

　　某些國名：

　　the People’s Republic of China 中華人民共和國

　　the United States of America (U.S.A.)美國

　　專用名詞

　　地理名詞

　　組織機構：

　　the United Nations 聯合國

　　the State Department 美國國務院

　　條約報紙：

　　the Geneva Agreement 日內互協議

　　the People’s Daily 人民日報

　　建筑物：

　　the Great Hall of the people 人民大會堂

　　the National Gallery 國家美術館

　　江河海洋：

　　the Yangtze 長江， the Pacific 太平洋

　　the Thames 泰晤士河， the Indian Ocean 印度洋

　　山脈群島：

　　the Alps 阿爾卑斯山，the philippines 菲律賓群島

　　the Choushan Archipelago 舟山群島

　　海峽海灣：
