　　10. at last ，at length ，finally ，in the end ，lastly 這幾個表達，中文意思都可說成 “最后、終于” 但用法有所不同。

　　at last 經常表示歷經曲折、磨難之后，往往有較濃重的感情色彩，如不耐煩、如愿等等：He has finished his speech at last. 他總算講完了。Man has reached the moon at last.“人類終于登上了月球。”

　　At length強調時間的拖延，表示經過了好長的時間：After a long journey they arrived at length in Naples.他們經長途旅行后才終于到了那不勒斯。

　　finally 著重動作發生的先后順序，不帶感情色彩：They talked about it for hours, finally , they decided not to go. 他們談了好幾個小時，最后決定不去。

　　in the end 跟finally 相當，通常表示動作的先后次序：He tried many ways of earning a living, in the end, he became a farm worker. “他嘗試過許多謀生方式，最后做了農場工人。”但in the end 還有它自己特有的用法，就是用于將來的情況，這時，其他的表達都不能用：The communism will outlive the capitalim in the end. “共產主義必將勝利，資本主義必將滅亡。” 前面這些表達都是結果、結局、結論。lastly則完全不同，它是個序數詞性質的表達，表示最后提到的一項內容：Lastly ，let me mention the great support 1’ve had from my wife. “最后，我要提一下從妻子那里得到的極大支持。”

　　38. at once，immediately ，right away， right now 這些表達都是 “立刻、馬上” 的意。

　　at once 即刻行動的味道最濃. 常見于口語：Te11 him to come to the office at once. 叫他馬上來辦公室。immediately 的緊迫感稍輕些，常見于書面語：They took action immediately. 他們馬上采取行動。right away 是美國英語，亦作right off，常見于口語：I'll come to pick you up right away. 我馬上就來接你。right now 強調此刻的行動，常見于口語：He will see you right now. 他馬上就見你。
