獨立結構通常由名詞(或代詞)+分詞，名詞(或代詞)+形容詞，名詞(或代詞)+不定式，名詞(或代詞)+介詞短語以及名詞(或代詞)+副詞構成。獨立結構主要用在書面語中，在日常口語中較為少見。
The girl ran quickly， her friend following. (名詞+現在分詞) 女孩跑得很快，她的朋友緊隨其后。
She lay on her back， her hands crossed under her head. (名詞+過去分詞) 她面朝天枕著雙手躺在那里。
She turned to him， her dark eyes brilliant and excited. 她轉向他，黑黑的眼睛露出激動的神情。
He was silent for a moment， his lips tight. (名詞+形容詞) 他雙唇緊閉，沉默了片刻。
They went to the beach， all of them to stay in a hotel. (名詞+不定式) 他們去海邊，所有人都住旅館。
The soldiers marched down the road， their rifles on their shoulders. 戰士們行進在大路上，肩上扛著槍。
Summer over， they returned to school. (名詞+副詞) 夏天過去，他們返校了。
Our work finished， we all went back home. (時間狀語) 工作干完后，我們都回家了。
獨立結構在句中作狀語表示時間、原因、條件，伴隨動作以及補充說明。
Time being short， we must be in a hurry. (原因狀語) 時間不多，我們得趕快動身。
Weather permitting， we'll go for an outing tomorrow. (條件狀語) 如果天氣好的話，我們明天就去郊游。
